Welcome to Class 1
Our Class Teachers are: Miss Griffiths and Mrs French
A warm welcome form Early Years Foundation Stage. We believe that every child deserves the best start in their education and we aim to help children acquire a range of skills and knowledge that will provide a firm foundation for future success. We are a small, nurturing setting and we are committed to ensuring our youngest children feel valued, cared for and enjoy their time here. Our Foundation Stage is made up of our Nursery children, who can be admitted as soon as they turn three years old, and our Reception children. Having our children together means they are able to learn from one another, make lots of friends, and develop caring, supportive relationships.
OFSED, January 2019 reported ‘children show confidence in their learning and make strong progress.’

Early Years Curriculum
It is our aim to foster a love of learning in children from their very first days here at Ferryhill Station Primary School. We provide a wide variety of experiences that are linked to children’s interests and build on from what they already know. Our curriculum is broad and balanced and provides children with the opportunity to learn from first-hand experiences, developing their understanding of concepts and helping them acquire a knowledge of the world around them. There is a strong focus on language development and this underpins our entire provision here at Ferryhill Station Primary. We understand that children’s skills in Speaking and Listening are life skills, essential for them to access the curriculum and develop their relationships with others.
In Foundation Stage, children are taught through a mixture of activities led by adults and through play-based learning. Staff work alongside children, observing what they do and extending their thinking. Adults also provide good models for speaking and listening. We work hard to make children feel safe and secure and we are committed to promoting their emotional well-being.
Foundation Stage children follow the EYFS curriculum, working towards achieving the Early Learning Goals by the end of their Reception year. Our more able pupils are supported in exceeding the Early Learning Goals.
Parents as Partners
We firmly believe that children learn best when there is a strong partnership between teachers and parents and carers and we aim to work closely with our families to develop this important link. Parents are regularly invited in to share their children’s learning, such as ‘Stay and Play’ sessions and to observe their children take part in group times and lessons. We carry out ‘Home Visits’ for children starting our setting, establishing links with children and their families prior to them coming into school.
Outdoor Play
We value outdoor play, believing it is important for children’s health, development and well-being. At Ferryhill Station Primary, our Foundation Stage children access their own Garden which is rich in resources and provides them with valuable learning opportunities. Whilst they work outside, children are supervised and extended in their play by adults.
Children will have the opportunity to work in the Garden every day throughout the year, except in extreme weather conditions. Therefore, they will need a warm coat for cooler weather and suitable shoes. We provide wellies and waterproof suits for water and sand play.
